The Father’s Day Present

For Father’s Day, I made it simple for my family. I told them all to just get me Amazon gift cards and I’d figure out the present for myself.

After the gift cards were in-hand, I decided on a pair of boots that I could use for light trail hiking and general casual wear. A number of online reviews gave positive feedback about the boots from a company out of South Africa called Jim Green, so I ordered a pair of a model called the African Rangers. Sadly, there wasn’t enough money on the gift cards to really lean into that theme and also pick up a safari jacket and pith helmet.

The package arrived today. Before I had a chance to even lay eyes on the boots, the artwork on the box told me that they apparently have some interesting ideas about branding in South Africa. (Insert your own Elon Musk joke here.) Here’s what I got:

When I bought the boots online, I honestly didn’t notice that the company’s logo is a blunderbuss-wielding frog in a top hat and suspenders, but there it is. I don’t plan to delve into the world of cosplay, but if ever did, I would dress as this logo.
Looking good right out of the box.
That frog though.
This tread should provide better traction on trails than what I’ve been getting from my aging New Balance dad sneakers.
Just in case you weren’t sure about how much Jim Green wants you to like that frog, they put this decal in the box along with the boots.

The first road test, performing the most important task these work boots will ever see — taking Ursa, the entitled Siberian Husky, on her nightly walk. So far, so good.
