Fog Haven

Yesterday was a sunny, warm summer Saturday. In theory, it was a perfect day to visit the beach. Jen and I decided to drive the Fair Haven Beach State Park for a walk on the pier at sunset.

It was past 7 p.m. when we got there, so I wasn’t surprised that there were no lifeguards on duty, but it was still a little odd that the beach was largely empty on a Saturday. (The sign at the park entrance stating that the water temperature stood at 58 degrees might have contributed to that.)

The empty beach gave off “Boys of Summer” vibes.

As we started walking around the park, we noticed that there was a heavy fog hanging over the lake. Skies up to the waterline were clear, but the pier was pea-soup territory. So much for the sunset stroll idea.

Here are a few photos showing how the surroundings during our walk got progressively more reminiscent of a horror-movie scene:

The entrance to the pier. Still pretty clear at this point.
The fog was a little reminiscent of the Canadian wildfire smoke from earlier in the month.
The further we got out on the pier, the thicker the fog became. At this point, it started to resemble the tableau from a creepy dream.
A warning sign is a lot more ominous when you can’t see more than a few feet past it.
The end of the next pier over.
Our walk culminated with a fog-filled selfie at the end of the pier. It’s the little things. (Photo credit: Jennifer Parke-Marriner)
