Orange Byways

Every summer, around this time, rural roadsides in CNY see a mass blooming of orange lilies. I’ve always referred to them as tiger lilies, but upon doing some quick online research, I discovered that not all of these orange lilies are necessarily of the tiger variety. Whatever they are called, they grow in ditches along the side of the road, and they are quite prolific.

My online research also revealed that these ditch lilies are not held in particularly high regard by horticulturalists and are considered a borderline invasive species. Be that as it may, I always enjoy seeing them appear. They add a nice pop of vibrant color to the landscape and serve as a reassuring reminder that summer is in full swing. (Also, as a Syracuse alum, I feel obliged to champion all things orange.)
