Old Man Stuff

Scenes From a Yellow Wood

It was a crisp October Sunday. One might say it was the Platonic ideal of a fall day in Central New York — the kind of day that makes me feel a little guilty if I don’t spend at least part of it outdoors. If Mother Nature is going to provide an autumnal paradise, you need to take advantage of it.

Once all the morning routines were out of the way, there was just enough time to get in the car and take a drive to Cayuga County’s lovely Sterling Nature Center, grab a quick hike along the shores of Lake Ontario, and get back home before the Bills game kicked off at 1 p.m., so that’s just what my hiking partner and I did. Here’s a little bit of what we saw:

The beginning of the trail.
This path looks like the backdrop for a Tolkeinesque fantasy painting involving elves or hobbits. (Maybe I’m only thinking that because the local Ren-Faire is right down the road.)
The fall foliage had us gawking straight up in the air like rube tourists walking in Manhattan for the first time.
Primeval.
Le Grande Orange.
Coming soon to a Windows wallpaper near you.
The lake made for a nice contrasting backdrop to the warm colors of the foliage.
This is one of my favorite beaches, largely because there’s almost never anyone else there when I visit it.
