And to Think That I Saw It All on Wyoming Street

I work on Syracuse’s West Side, in a building at the corner of West Fayette and Wyoming Streets. The neighborhood used to be a manufacturing center back during Syracuse’s industrial peak. These days, it has transitioned into something of an extension of downtown with office space co-existing alongside some of the more poverty-stricken residential areas in the city.

The other day, I took a stroll down Wyoming Street, snapping a few pictures along the way. These scenes represent the landscape of my workaday life.

My employer, the Central New York Business Journal, is located in the same building as WCNY, Syracuse’s PBS station. It’s a bastion of culture and sophistication…at least until I walk through the door in the morning.
Delavan Studios sits directly across from my office. It’s an old industrial building that has been repurposed into studio space for artists.
Just say, “Yo.”
Anyone who has spent time in Syracuse knows that it has long been called the “Salt City.” Apparently, the industry that gave rise to that nickname started in this part of town around 200 years ago.
This is one of several poetic public-art messages featured in the neighborhood. I’m not sure if it was planned out intentionally, but the building peeking out over the top of the bridge houses the offices of National Grid, our local utility company.
